Alderman Martin proposes another overhaul to the license process
Something worth watching out of City Council for anyone trying to open a business in Chicago. Alderman Matt Martin has introduced an Order asking BACP to build an implementation plan for a "One-Stop Shop Business Licensing and Permitting Portal" for Chicago small businesses.
What it would cover: applying for and renewing all licenses and permits, requesting inspections, coordinating directly with City department liaisons, and checking the real status of an application or inspection in one place.
Anyone who has walked a client through a Chicago license application knows exactly what this is trying to fix. A single restaurant opening can mean separate tracks through BACP, Buildings, Health, Fire, and Zoning, with no one place to see where any of it actually stands.
I want to be optimistic here, but the City has tried before to make its systems run more smoothly and it never quite works. There are too many individual departments and not enough of a comprehensive plan to make them work together. A portal built on top of that structure inherits the same problem.
Perhaps this directive, if it passes, helps move things in that direction. It will take a larger plan to get it right.
